Hot Water Problems? Tripping Electrics Is a Common (and Fixable) Fault
If your hot water keeps tripping your electrics, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common call-outs I deal with around Lapta, Alsancak and Karsiyaka. The good news is that in most cases it’s a straightforward repair and normally fixed for less than £60.
Why Does Hot Water Trip the Electrics?
The most common cause is a faulty immersion heater element. Over time, these elements sit in hot water constantly and eventually break down internally.
When this happens, electricity can leak to earth, causing:
- The circuit breaker or RCD to trip
- Power to cut out when hot water is switched on
- Intermittent tripping that gets worse over time
This fault often starts gradually — maybe it trips once in a while — then suddenly it trips every time you turn the hot water on.
Common Signs of a Failed Immersion Heater
- Electrics trip only when hot water is switched on
- No hot water but cold water works fine
- Tripping becomes more frequent over days or weeks
- Older solar or roof-mounted hot water systems
In many homes in North Cyprus, especially with roof-mounted tanks, this is a very common age-related failure.
How the Fault Is Fixed
In most cases, the solution is simply to replace the immersion heater element. This involves:
- Isolating the power safely
- Draining only what’s needed
- Removing the failed element
- Fitting a new quality replacement
- Testing for safety and correct operation
If the wiring or thermostat is damaged, this is checked at the same time.
How Much Does It Usually Cost?
In most cases, this repair is completed for less than £60, depending on access and the condition of the system.
I always explain the issue clearly before any work is carried out, so there are no surprises.
