Swimming Pool Pump Repairs

Pool Pump Problems? Here’s What to Look For (and When to Call Lapta HandyMan)

Your pool pump is the heart of the filtration system. When it starts playing up, water quality drops fast, the electrics can trip, and expensive parts can overheat. If you’re in Lapta – Alsancak – Karsiyaka and your pump isn’t behaving, here are the most common symptoms (and what they usually mean).

Is your pump noisy?

A healthy pump has a steady “hum” and water flow sound. If you’re hearing grinding, screeching, rattling, or rumbling, it often points to:

  • Worn bearings (common on older motors)
  • Cavitation (pump starving for water due to blocked suction, low water level, air leak)
  • Debris in the impeller (stones, grit, leaves getting past the basket)
  • Loose mountings or pipework vibrating

Tip: If the noise gets worse quickly or becomes a high-pitched scream, switch it off and get it checked—running it can damage the motor.

Does your pump get hot?

Pool pump motors run warm, but they should never feel too hot to touch or smell “electrical”. Overheating can be caused by:

  • Poor ventilation (pump boxed in or covered)
  • Blocked impeller or restriction causing strain
  • Low voltage / supply issues
  • Failing capacitor or motor components
  • Incorrect run time / running dry

Important: A pump that’s overheating may trip out to protect itself. Don’t keep resetting it—find the cause.

Does it cut out unexpectedly?

If the pump runs for a while then stops, you might be dealing with:

  • Thermal overload from overheating
  • Electrical faults (loose connections, water ingress, failing breaker/press control)
  • Timer / control gear issues
  • Bad capacitor (motor struggles, then gives up)

If it’s tripping the electrics (RCD/MCB), it’s best to leave it off and have it inspected safely.

Not moving enough water?

Weak flow is one of the most common complaints, and it’s often fixable. Typical causes include:

  • Blocked pump basket or skimmer basket
  • Dirty filter (needs backwash/clean or media attention)
  • Air leak on suction side (lid O-ring, unions, valves)
  • Clogged impeller
  • Valve positions incorrect or partially closed
  • Worn impeller / pump not matched to the pool system

Quick check: Look at the pump lid. If you see lots of air bubbles or the basket isn’t filling properly, it’s likely a suction-side air leak or blockage.

Won’t start?

If the pump won’t start at all, or just hums and does nothing, common reasons are:

  • Power supply issue (tripped breaker, timer not sending power)
  • Failed capacitor (very common)
  • Seized bearings or jammed impeller
  • Faulty control gear (switch, timer, contactor, press control)
  • Water ingress in the motor terminal box

Safety note: If you suspect water ingress or burning smell, keep it off and call for a proper check.

Won’t stop?

If a pump keeps running when it shouldn’t, it’s usually not the pump itself—but the control gear. Causes can include:

  • Timer stuck on or wired incorrectly
  • Contactor relay stuck (contacts welded closed)
  • Automation settings forcing constant run

This is exactly the sort of thing that can waste electricity and overwork the motor—worth sorting quickly.

Air in the pump? Losing prime?

If the pump keeps “losing prime” (basket empties, flow drops, lots of air), it often comes down to:

  • Low pool water level (skimmer sucking air)
  • Cracked/flattened lid O-ring
  • Loose unions or valve stems letting air in
  • Suction blockage (skimmer line or pump inlet)

Even a tiny air leak can cause noisy running, weak flow, and overheating over time.

Pumps and Control Gear: What I can help with

  • Pump diagnostics (noise, overheating, weak flow, stopping/starting issues)
  • Basket, lid seal & union leak fixes
  • Impeller clearing and blockage removal
  • Capacitor replacement (common “won’t start / hums” fix)
  • Timer / switch / contactor checks
  • Press control unit checks & replacement where fitted
  • General pool system troubleshooting (filter, valves, circulation)

When to switch it off immediately

  • Burning smell or smoke
  • Water leaking onto electrics
  • RCD/MCB tripping repeatedly
  • Motor too hot to touch
  • Loud screeching/grinding that suddenly starts
